The wildly popular art installation of “pop-up” pianos that allow anyone to sit down play music is back, starting tomorrow (6/18) and running through July 2nd. ABC-NY has a brief video feature on the event.
Previously named “Play Me, I’m Yours,” this year’s installation is going by the far less catchy “Sing For Hope.” Apparently there was some sort of falling out between the founding artist and the group that sponsors the installation.
The event has grown for 2011, with 88 pianos this year compared to 60 in 2010 (60 uprights and 28 grands). Eight of those pianos are located on the Upper West Side:
- Cathedral Church Of St. John The Divine
- Central Park — Bandshell
- Central Park — Dana Discovery Center
- Central Park — Visitors’ Center
- Lincoln Center — Alice Tully Hall
- Lincoln Center — Hearst Plaza
- Lincoln Center — David Rubenstein Atrium
- Riverside Park South — Pier I
