Precious Premiere at New York Film Festival

Friday, October 2nd, 2009

precious-movieThe Centerpiece selection of the Main Slate films from the 47th New York Film Festival, all screened at Alice Tully Hall (Broadway and 65th), is a much-buzzed about film titled Precious.  The film is based upon the novel Push by Sapphire and depicts “the horrific life of Clareece ‘Precious’ Jones, an obese, barely literate 16-year-old living in late ’80s Harlem who is abused by both her father and mother.”  While the story could easily be one of hopelessness, it instead is a tale “of a young woman’s determination to free herself from the pathologies surrounding her, guided by a teacher who senses her innate talents.”  The film stars new talent Gabourey Sidibe as the lead, with an outstanding supporting cast including Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, and Mo’Nique.  In addition to two Saturday screenings, there will be a special HBO Director’s Dialogues with the film’s director, Lee Daniels, who is already receiving tremendous praise for his sophomore film as director.  Remember, if tickets are not available online, rush tickets can still become available the day of the show.
