Progress of 59th Street Subway Station

Monday, April 12th, 2010

59th-st-subway-aWhile much has been publicized about the opening of the renovated 96th Street 1/2/3 subway station earlier this month, construction at the 59th Street 1/A/B/C/D station quietly keeps plugging along.  Check out these photos of some of the progress at the station, courtesy of the Twitter subway news source @NYCTSubwayScoop.  The work has been kept relatively discrete because it is not a capital construction project, but that doesn’t mean that the project isn’t pretty major.  The photos show the completion of the south mezzanine, along with other construction progress.  Along with the mezzanine, the station’s renovations include the completed wall mosaic art by Sol LeWitt, installation of new lighting and flooring, a new entrance at 60th and Broadway, passenger restrooms, elevators, and a “retail galleria.”  For more information on the Columbus Circle subway station renovations, check out the project description at Dattner Architects.  Click through for more photos of the progress.
