The New York Post reports that Edward Callahan, a 55-year-old homeless man, caused a scare on Monday when he entered the Chase bank on 72nd and Columbus and attempted to rob it. After he entered the bank holding an old television remote control, he claimed he had a bomb and demanded money. He allegedly shouted for everyone leave the bank, and terrified employees and customers fled outside and to the roof of the building, thinking that the remote control was linked to an explosive device (it was actually just an old remote control). When the manager handed him a black bag (contents unknown), police arrived to respond to the hidden alarm being triggered. They apprehended Callahan, who reportedly “stopped in his tracks and started shaking like he had a seizure.” Callahan was last reported to be awaiting charges at a local precinct.
