The former Elite Cafe on Columbus and 68th

Tonight, Community Board 7 (the Upper West Side advisory board on land use, zoning matters, and community concerns) will have a meeting for the Business & Consumer Issues Committee.  On the agenda for the public meeting is a handful of applications for on-premise liquor licenses.  The applications indicate that several locations (some now empty) may soon house new restaurants or liquor-serving establishments.  These locations include:

• 429 Amsterdam Avenue at 80th: This address currently houses Portugese tapas bar and restaurant Luzia’s, but the application is for a business named Taberna.
• 185 Columbus Avenue at 69th: This is the former location of Elite Café & Restaurant, which closed in June for nonpayment of taxes.  While it was rumored that famed chef Bill Telepan would open a wine bar in the spot, the business name on the application is Jalapeno Restaurant.
• 141 W 69th at Broadway: While this has been the location of the kosher restaurant Levana for 30 years, the restaurant has announced an upcoming relocation, yet to be determined.  The application for  a new liquor license has a “To Be Determined” name listed as the business.
• 226 W 79th at Broadway: This location was once the home of Indian restaurant Masala Garden, but after it closed, another Indian restaurant named Bagicha took its place.  However, Bagicha didn’t make it either, closing in December 2008.  The name on the liquor license application for the new restaurant is Sunburnt Calf… sounds very likely to be another location for the wildly popular East Village all-you-can-drink brunch spot The Sunburnt Cow.

Want to have a say in the liquor license applications, or do you just want to know more?  You can attend the Community Board 7 meeting this evening, or keep checking My Upper West… we will keep you informed if these openings become official.
