Saturday: NYC International Polar Festival
It’s predicted to be a summery Saturday, with temps in the 80’s… if you feel like cooling off, head to the NYC International Polar Festival, taking place at the American Museum of Natural History (Central Park West at 79th). The festival is being put on in conjunction with the opening of Race to the End of the Earth, the AMNH’s newest exhibition documenting the story of the race to reach the South Pole. Saturday’s festival will feature events and activities with a focus on Antarctica for all ages, including performances, short talks, films, and unique opportunities to interact with scientists and modern-day polar explorers. Programs include “Penguins and Polar Bears: The Tip of the Iceberg,” an interactive show using puppets, games, and songs; “Meet The Explorers,” where guests will have a chance to meet incredible adventurers who have journeyed to Antarctica; the NYC premiere of the film Terra Antarctica: Rediscovering the Seventh Continent, which highlights the filmmaker’s exploration of the Antarctic Peninsula; and “Dr. Nebula’s Laboratory: Super Cold Show,” an interactive presentation that investigates the effects of super cold temperatures on our planet. The festival is free with museum admission, so check the day’s schedule and enjoy a visit to Antarctica right here in the city.
