Shakespeare in the Park Casting Announced
Public Theater announced a lineup of actors for this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park, and although fans of A-listers like last year’s Al Pacino may be disappointed to see a lack of big names, the cast includes some seasoned theater actors. The New York Times reports that the two plays, Measure for Measure and All’s Well That Ends Well, will include a repertory company of actors, with most of the actors performing roles in each of the two productions for its second consecutive summer. Actors for the plays, held from June 6th to July 30th at Central Park’s Delacorte Theater (mid-park, near 81st), include Annie Parisse (off-Broadway’s Becky Shaw), John Cullum (two-time Tony Award winner for Shenandoah and On the Twentieth Century), Andre Holland (The Whipping Man), Reg Rogers (Broadway’s Royal Family revival in 2009), Tonya Pinkins (Tony winner for Jelly’s Last Jam and a nominee as the title character in Caroline, or Change), veteran theater actor Michael Hayden (Carousel), and Danai Gurira. As for directors, Public Theater has lined up Daniel Sullivan (who recently directed Twelfth Night and The Merchant of Venice) for All’s Well That Ends Well and David Esbjornson (who recently directed Much Ado About Nothing) for Measure for Measure. The mostly-free performances release tickets on the day of the show, with lines forming early. Check back to the Public Theater website for more information as show dates approach.
