(Sort of) Free WiFi Coming to Central Park
Time Warner cable and Cablevision will begin providing NYC parkgoers with free WiFi services in exchange for a 10-year renewal of the cable television franchises, reports NBC New York. Don’t charge up your laptops just yet, however. The free WiFi is very limited… Time Warner and Cablevision customers will get three 10-minute blocks of free WiFi per month under the agreement, adding up to 30 minutes a month of free service. After that, the service is 99 cents per day. Although free WiFi in parks like Central and Riverside seems like a great idea, the catches in the proposed plan are leaving many New Yorkers less than excited. City Councilwoman Gale Brewer argues that WiFi in parks should be completely free, and questions the safety of a system that requires you to enter your information in order to sign on. For now, however, the deals seem to be moving forward. They will go to community access channels in each borough next, then must be signed off by the city’s Franchise and Concession Review Committee and the state’s Public Service Commission in order to become official.
