Student Attacked in Riverside Park for iPod

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

*Jul 07 - 00:05*A Barnard College student was attacked in Riverside Park while jogging early Monday morning in an apparent iPod theft.  The Daily News reports that Marisa Cortright, a 19-year-old Oregon native, was awake and talking yesterday after the Monday attack had caused her to incur a head injury and lose consciousness.  Cortright was jogging in the park in the vicinity of 120th around 6:00 am when the attacker jumped her, causing her to hit her head on a concrete wall. She was found sprawled on a bench, only missing her iPod, and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital with bleeding on the brain, a fractured cheekbone, and cuts to her face, head, and neck. While Cortright does not remember the attack clearly, she was able to provide a description of the attacker, a 6-foot-2 black man in his 40’s with heavy build and resembling the above police sketch. Anyone with information about the attack is encouraged to call 800.577.TIPS. In the meantime, police are reminding the public to stay safe in parks, bringing a friend when heading out at dusk, nighttime, or early morning, and staying aware of surroundings.
