Tavern on the Green to Change Management
Despite a strong attempt from current manager Jennifer Oz LeRoy and a slew of celebrities from Yoko Ono to Martha Stewart penning support letters for the LeRoy family, the Parks Department has awarded the operation license to Tavern on the Green (Central Park West and 67th) to someone new. Restaurateur and Central Park Boathouse operator Dean Poll has won the 20-year contract to operate the famous Central Park restaurant, and he has big plans. Poll’s business plan includes a $25 million capital investment into the building, with green renovations, a 1950′s-style makeover, updates to the kitchen and plumbing, and landscaping renovations to expose the building’s architecture to park goers. He may even change the name! According to the AP, Poll may give the restaurant a “fresh” name partly because it would be costly to use the original name, currently controlled by the LeRoy family. Poll’s operation of the restaurant takes effect January 1st. [NY Daily News]
