Tavern on the Green Donates 4,000 Pounds of Food after Closing

tavern-on-the-greenAfter closing its doors on New Year’s Eve, Tavern on the Green (67th and Central Park West) has been wrapping up loose ends, from auctioning off its furniture and decor to working out financial woes after declaring bankruptcy last year. Despite the downsides that the Tavern and its former operator, Jennifer LeRoy, have seen in the last year, the restaurant acted very charitably. Tavern of the Green is donating its last shipment of food to City Harvest, the NYC organization that distributes food to soup kitchens and food pantries, according to Grub Street. The restaurant delivered 2,000 pounds of fresh food and another 2,000 pounds of dry goods on Wednesday, adding to what Tavern said is over 50,000 pounds of food for the city’s hungry. City Harvest has experienced an increase in demand for emergency food by an average of 15 percent in the third quarter of 2009 compared to 2008, so the donation is a welcome gift to a worthy cause.
