THURSDAY 7/4: 37th Annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show Along The Hudson River

Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013

Tomorrow night marks the 37th Annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Show, which will once again take place along the Hudson River.

The official start time for the show is 9:00 pm, although it generally tends to be closer to 9:20ish. The fireworks run approximately 25 minutes.

Full details are available at Macy’s website.

This year’s show will continue the trend started last year: Only four barges will be used to launch fireworks, with the northernmost one located at approximately 42nd Street.

Prior to 2012, six barges were used, with the northernmost one located near West 55th Street.

The result is that officials are once again saying there will be “diminished views” north of 59th Street.

Based on feedback I received after last year’s show, the views from the Upper West Side are indeed not as good as the pre-2012 shows, but still “good enough” for most people.

The Hudson River Greenway and Riverside Park South areas generally provides the best viewing opportunities in the neighborhood. Some people arrive in the late-afternoon to claim spots, but my experience is that there are still pockets of standing room if you show up by around 8:15 or 8:30.

If you’re willing to travel a bit south and want the best view possible, the primary pedestrian viewing spot is from the West Side Highway, which will be closed to vehicular traffic starting at 4:30 pm. If you want a good spot there, you’ll need to plan on arriving early.

Macys.com has a list of pedestrian access points to the highway. The northernmost one appears to be 57th Street, although I could swear that in previous years people were able to walk on at 72nd Street.

NOTE: Police are requesting that spectators refrain from bringing lawn chairs, blankets, backpacks/containers or other large bags. Spectators will be subject to random searches for security purposes. Also, be aware that ALL ACCESS POINTS to the West Side Highway and Riverside Park are subject to police closure at any time.

There are police barricades and lights being readied at the 72nd Street entrance, as well as a roadside sign telling people what items are not allowed. It certainly looks like there will be access from 72nd as usual.
