Two Benefits For Japan & Haiti – Today On The Upper West Side
It’s a little short notice, but there are two benefits taking place today on the Upper West Side that I wanted to point out. They were mentioned in the “Today On The UWS” post, but it was so long this morning that I’m afraid they may have gotten overlooked.
25CPW (Central Park West & 62nd), the artist-run gallery with “a mission of strengthening the community through a diverse schedule of culture events,” is hosting a photography auction from 6 – 9 pm to benefit Architecture For Humanity’s Japan tsunami relief.
The event will have music by Yumi Kurosawa and The Thomas Wesley Stern Band. Sushi from Blue Ribbon will be served. Tickets are $20.

The other fundraiser is a benefit for Haiti called “Art For Life,” taking place at the Calhoun School on West End & 81st. It is sponsored by the Upper School Calhoun Haiti Relief Committee and the Vassar Haiti Project To Benefit The People of Haiti.
A silent auction will be open to the Calhoun Community from 1:30 – 3:30 and the general public from 3:30 – 8:00 pm.
From 3:30 – 4:30, the US Jazz Band will perform. From 3:30 – 6:30 there will be craft activities. From 6:30 – 7:30 there will be a panel discussion entitled “Where Does Haiti Go From Here?” The discussion will feature Dr. Deborah Ottenheimer, Haiti medical relief worker, humanitarian and Calhoun parent; a representative from Water.org; and Lizabeth Paravisini-Gebert, Professor of Caribbean culture and literature in Vassar College’s Department of Hispanic Studies.
Funds raised by the Art for Haiti Benefit will go to Water.org, The Peligre School of Hope in Haiti, and The Vassar Haiti Project, which funds four initiatives in Chermaitre, Haiti: Education, Reforestation, Water, & Health.
