MyUpperWest Pick of the Month: Central Park Ice Rinks

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010

Each month, MyUpperWest chooses an Upper West Side business as Pick of the Month.  These businesses are part of what makes our neighborhood great, and we highly recommend checking them out if you haven’t yet had the chance.  This month’s pick is actually a classic New York City winter pastime… ice skating in Central Park.  Click through to read more about Central Park’s Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink.

There’s always some sure-fire signs the holidays are around the corner in New York City… there’s a true chill in the air, Santa hats are lining the seasonal shelves at Duane Reade, and old Jack-O’-Lanterns line the curbs with the trash.  Another way to tell it’s that time in the city?  The Central Park ice skating rinks are up and running.  Central Park’s Wollman Rink, located near the 6th Avenue entrance from Central Park South, and Lasker Rink, located near the Lenox Avenue entrance at 110th, opened yesterday.  Each rink offers ice hockey, skating school for a variety of levels, and parties & events for your next big occasion, accommodating 20 to 2,000 guests.  Public skating also takes place daily, with Wollman rates going from $4.75 to $15 and Lasker rates going from $2.25 to $6.50, depending on youth/senior discounts and peak/off-peak times.  Skate rentals are also available for $6.25 at Wollman and $5.50 at Lasker.

Whether you were a regular skater last season or haven’t skated in decades, the Central Park ice rinks are a fantastic way to enjoy the winter.  There’s nothing like feeling you are in a winter wonderland, surrounded by trees, nature, and… New York City.  Get more details about Wollman Rink and Lasker Rink at their websites, and head out to Central Park, lace up your skates, and get in the holiday spirit.
