My Upper West Pick of the Month: Pour
Each month, My Upper West chooses an Upper West Side business as Pick of the Month. These businesses are part of what makes our neighborhood great, and we highly recommend checking them out if you haven’t yet had the chance. This month’s pick is the wine store Pour, located at 321 Amsterdam, at 75th. Click through to read more about Pour.
The Pour wine boutique was founded by husband-and-wife team H. Tres Meyer and Christine L. Beattie, who aimed to create a shop that engages customers while educating them on how to pair wines and spirits with food. The small shop includes about 175 types of wines and spirits, along with a wine tasting and demonstration bar. From the moment you walk in, you know you are in for a unique wine-buying experience, with vivid color-coded graphics that serve as a guide to pairing wines correctly with food. The wines are organized with food-pairing in mind, grouping by flavor and body like “mellow” and “crisp.” Each wine has a custom developed note card that provides educational information on the specific wine and recommended detailed food pairing and preparation guidelines, as well as a color-coded label on the side of the bottle with the appropriate matching food category so that customers have a handy pairing reference at home.
In addition to the unique, informative, and friendly retail store, Pour offers an online store, wine club, free weekly wine tastings, wine classes, and even the opportunity to book a “Sommelier for an Evening” at your next party to give you and your friends an introduction to an interesting array of wines. Stop by Pour to learn more about wine and food pairings and experience what the cute little boutique has to offer.
