Upper West Side Closing: Big Nick’s Shutters After 50+ Years On The UWS

Monday, July 29th, 2013

It’s been nearly seven months since news broke that Big Nick’s — an Upper West Side fixture since 1962 — was facing possible closure.

The restaurant had since managed operate on a month-to-month basis while attempting to negotiate a new lease, but the clock has finally run out.

After 51 years on the UWS, Big Nick’s has served its last meal.

The restaurant officially shuttered in the wee hours of this morning and the sign above is now posted out front.

I’ve heard from several readers that employees are reporting the space will become a bank, but there’s no official confirmation on that.

Over the past half century, Nick’s has garnered legions of fans and a reputation as an Upper West Side institution — this feels like an unseemly way for things to end.

Word has it that owner Nick Imirziades is looking for a new space further north in the neighborhood, giving fans some hope that the restaurant may be able to conjure up a second act.

We’ll see…

So sad! I was hoping this day wouldn’t come. Big Nick’s is an authentic slice of the “real” Upper West Side…the non-gentrified UWS. I hope they find a new place soon…
