Upper West Side Fire Likely Caused By Excess Lint In Clothes Dryer

One of my biggest pet peeves of city living is sharing clothes dryers with people who neglect to clean out the lint filter after each use. Seriously, it take like five seconds and it’s just common courtesy.
If you’re one of those “lint-leavers” and courtesy isn’t a good enough reason to change your ways, here’s another: If you don’t clean the filter your laundry might catch fire.
DNAinfo has the story of a fire at a high-rise at 924 West End Avenue earlier this week. The blaze started inside a clothes dryer and a firefighter at the scene said “the fire likely started due to excess lint in the dryer.”
No one was injured and everything was under control within about 20 minutes of the initial 911 call.
While it’s possible the lint in question may have built up somewhere in the dryer other than the filter, I choose to believe that some lazy person just neglected to do simple maintenance.
Hopefully the guilty offenders in my building are reading this and it scares them into changing their habits. I’m finding it more and more difficult to function in a society where people don’t clean up their lint.
