Upper West Side Hangover Helpers
The New York Post put out a great list just in time for the often-yucky morning of New Year’s Day… a few breakfast sandwiches that are perfect hangover helpers. We Upper West Siders are lucky enough to get three sandwiches on the list served right here in the neighborhood. Click through for the UWS hangover helpers.
1. Sausage and egg sandwich, $18, served at Café Luxembourg, 70th near Amsterdam. The combination of a 4-ounce, seared, homemade harissa and rosemary sausage patty, gruyere cheese, and sunny-side-up eggs on a seeded brioche bun is a perfect alcohol-soaker that offers a gourmet alternative to the Egg McMuffin. The sandwich, which started out as a special just a few weeks ago but is now a permanent fixture on breakfast and brunch menus due to its popularity, is served with hollandaise and a side salad (at brunch).

2. Parmigiano and proscuitto puffs with mortadella, $6, served at Salumeria Rosi, Amsterdam at 73rd. Cesare Casella’s cheesy puffs have been a specialty of the Italian chef for 34 years, and Upper West Siders are lucky enough to have the sandwich on the menu at Salumeria Rosi for the past two years. The beignets, which include parmigiano, prosciutto, eggs, butter and thyme, are served warm from the oven, stuffed with silky mortadella (pork sausage). As many as 300 are made and sold each day, with three in an order, and as many as 300 are made and sold each day. Hung over or not, these are a tasty breakfast treat.
3. Patty melt, part of a $28 prix fixe menu, served at Telepan, 69th near Columbus. After enjoying a traditional patty melt at a New Jersey diner, chef Bill Telepan came up with this fancy breakfast sandwich, which comes on rye bread from Amy’s bakery, with grass-fed chuck seasoned with BBQ spices, aged cheddar, and caramelized onions. In case the sandwich doesn’t soak up last night’s cocktails enough, it comes with salt and vinegar cottage fries, too. Bill Telepan warns that he usually needs a nap after the meal, and promises you to feel stuffed after finishing the gourmet meal.
