Sesame Street, the long-running, educational, and popular children’s show, celebrated its 40th birthday this week with a range of festivities. Tuesday marked the official anniversary, so on Monday, the show’s cast and creators, along with media like Gothamist, enjoyed a special dedication by Mayor Bloomberg, who proclaimed the anniversary “Sesame Street Day” and temporarily renamed the corner of 64th and Broadway (which happens to be where Sesame Street’s corporate offices are located) “Sesame Street”. While some argue that the show actually takes place on a street in Brooklyn or Queens, the creators actually modeled the street off of several different streets in several different neighborhoods spanning across boroughs, including some blocks in the Upper West Side. Regardless of where you might think Sesame Street is, we can now all walk past the “real” Sesame Street right here in our neighborhood.
