Upper West Side Openings & Closings: By The Way Bakery, Frozen Peaks

Monday, January 13th, 2014

Good news if you have a sweet tooth — the Upper West Side just got a new bakery.

It’s even better news if you’ve got dietary restrictions, as the menu is both gluten free and dairy free.

By The Way Bakery opened at 2442 Broadway (between 90th & 91st) last week.

This is BTW’s second location, following the original which opened in Hastings-On-Hudson in 2011. The Westchester outpost garners a glowing 4 1/2 stars on Yelp, which bodes well for the UWS.

From BTW’s website:

This is a special place, the kind you remember, but can never find. By The Way is an old-fashioned bakery where everything is made by hand, from scratch, in small batches.

Raspberry muffins bursting with raspberries, a chocolate cupcake topped with chocolate curls, a carrot cake encircled with candies pecans. A smile you can taste. Come find out why our friends call By The Way Bakery “a delicious little cupcake of a shop.”

The name comes from the fact that, despite using certified gluten free flours and no dairy, you can’t taste the difference in their goods. As in “Oh, by the way, it’s gluten and dairy free.”

I’m a glutton for gluten myself, but a brownie I tried there earlier today was just as tasty as any I’ve eaten elsewhere.

You’ll have to decide for yourself, but it certainly seems like they’ve got mainstream-flavors with dietary-restriction friendly ingredients.

Shop owner Helene Godin has an interesting background: She spent 22 years as a media and intelectual property lawyer before deciding to quite the rat race and try something new.

You can read more in this 2011 New York Times profile.

In addition to their baked goods, BTW features Stumptown coffee, which I gather is pretty popular.

By The Way Bakery is open seven days a week, from 8 am – 6 pm. They can be reached at 212-877-0806.

Thanks to MUW reader Arthur for the tip.

Elsewhere…

In closing news, MUW reader @JamieLee74 reports that froyo purveyor Frozen Peaks has shuttered at 2541 Broadway (corner of 95th).

The store was first announced as iCrave back in June 2012, finally opening in October of that year. At some point in the interim it morphed into Frozen Peaks, but alas that experiment seems to have ended quickly.

Frozen treat lovers shouldn’t despair — there’s a Lite Choice located across the street, a Tasti D-Lite half a block away, and a 16 Handles three blocks north.

Thanks. I got a press release earlier today from the broker marketing the space and will post later in the week.
