Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Dean’s, Arte Cafe, Mexican Festival, Yogurtland

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

This one bums me out a bit, as I was a fan…

Italian restaurant and pizzeria Dean’s (215 W. 85th, between Broadway & Amsterdam) has shuttered.

Dean’s was owned by the same family as Patsy’s and customers are being directed to the UWS Patsy’s (61 W. 74th, near Columbus), which has a very similar menu.

Unfortunately, Patsy’s does not serve the “square pie” that was a fixture at Dean’s (and a personal favorite).

I was always under the impression that Dean’s did pretty good business, but apparently not good enough.

If you’d never been, the space was enormous. I stopped by Patsy’s earlier today and a waitress there told me she thought massive rent that accompanied the large space led to the closure.

I’ve had a handful of large group dinners at Dean’s over the years and will miss it.

Thankfully, the space won’t be empty for long.

A reader who didn’t want their name used wrote in earlier today to report a new awning was being installed this afternoon and was told the restaurant will be named Arte Cafe.

I called the Arte Cafe on W. 73rd earlier to see if they were connected but got either disconnected or hung up on — will see if I can get more details for the next “Openings & Closings.”

Thanks to MUW reader Iris for the photo above, taken before the new awning went up today.

Elsewhere…

It’s been more than two months since Mexican restaurant Maria Bonita unexpectedly shuttered at 2672 Broadway (at 102nd).

Maria Bonita opened in April 2012, replacing Mama Mexico, which closed suddenly in January 2012.

Good news if you like Mexican food, as it looks like the space is again going to be a Mexican restaurant.

I liquor license application has been filed for the space under the name Mexican Festival.

No additional details or opening date at the moment.

Finally, if you missed the earlier post, popular West Coast frozen yogurt chain Yogurtland is opening at 420 Amsterdam (corner of 80th).

This space is only about 100 feet north of the Pinkberry that opened at 414 Amsterdam last month, and less than five blocks from the 16 Handles at 325 Amsterdam (between 75th & 76th).

Upper West Siders in the area area about to have yet another froyo option.

    Noooooo :( I love Dean’s

Soooo bummed about Deans…they had the best Napoleon in the city and the square pie with pepperoni was mind-blowing.

I think a big problem for them based on reviews was they didn’t know how to do delivery (I got it delivered once and that was enough…) and the dilapidated awning wasn’t very inviting. But once you stepping inside it was a beautiful space and the food was always fantastic.

That’s a shame. It was always a good place to bring the family.
