Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Eddie’s Pizza Truck, Golden Boy Grocery, West Side Market

People tend to think of food trucks as mobile vehicles that drive around, but Eddie’s Pizza Truck (a finalist in this year’s “Vendy Awards”) just landed a permanent spot in Richard Tucker Square at Broadway & 66th.

Rather than a “truck,” it appears as though the UWS location will be more of a cart — similar to what Screme Gelato has in Verdi Square.

@ReporterLeslie write that Eddie’s recently won a five-year contract to operate seven days a week at Tucker Square. Per DNAinfo:

The pizza truck has [recently] been visiting the Upper West Side to serve dinner on Wednesday nights. The response was so positive that [owner] Derek Kaye decided to compete for the Parks Department contract.

Depending on the weather and customer demand, the cart will be open from roughly 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and could eventually serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, said Kaye.

Eddie’s website appears to have the exact hours for each day.

This is a pretty big coup for Eddie’s, as Richard Tucker Park is in a prime location. It’s within steps of Lincoln Center, Century 21, the Apple Store (RIP Steve Jobs), a weekly Greenmarket, and the subway. There’s significant foot-traffic there all day and I imagine a quick slice of pizza will be very appealing to passersby.

Eddie’s is known for their “Bar Pie,” a “a 10-inch thin-crust pie designed to be small enough to leave room in your stomach for a beer.” Apparently it clocks in at a more-than-reasonable 270 calories and is available with regular dough ($7.50) or whole wheat ($8.00).

In closing news, MUW reader Kathy reports that the Golden Boy grocery on Broadway (between 98th & 99th) “closed suddenly earlier in the week… it must have been there for 20 years.”

I have no proof that there’s a direct correlation, but a new West Side Market is slated to open one block south in the near future and it’s possible the owners of Golden Boy saw the writing on the wall in terms of its impact on business.

Whatever the reason, Golden Boy is no more.

I’m too far south of 98th to do any grocery shopping in that area myself, but apparently it’s slim pickings. There’s obviously Whole Foods on Columbus & 97th, but sometimes that can be overkill. Kathy wrote that until WSM opens, Gourmet Garage on Broadway (which she describes as “appalling”) is one of the only other options in the area.
