Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Gotham Burger Company, Verizon, Brief Encounters

Thursday, June 6th, 2013

Gotham Burger Company opened for business on the Upper West Side earlier this evening.

The kosher burger restaurant based out of Teaneck, NJ is located at 726 Amsterdam (between 95th & 96th).

From Gotham’s Facebook page:

We are excited to announce that our Manhattan location will be opening to the public this evening. To ensure that we can accommodate all of you we will only be offering table and bar service tonight. Next week we will begin take-out orders and delivery will be soon to follow. We are excited to bring the great fresh food that we are known for to the UWS and can’t wait to greet you!

Their website still hasn’t been updated with any information on the new UWS location, but you can at least look at the menu for their other location. I presume the offerings will be similar (although the prices probably won’t).

GreatKosherRestaurants.com recently had some additional details on the space:

They are turning the place into a sports bar/burger place with a VIP lounge. The owners promise that they will be offering the same great food that they are known for with a NYC edge (think beer in hand watching a large screen TV). Owner Avi Roth states “with a simple formula of quality fresh food and unparalleled customer service, people keep coming back and that is why we had a large demand to open in Manhattan.” Pre-paid Friday night Shabbos meals will be available once they are up and running.

726 Amsterdam was previously home to another kosher restaurant called Meat Me. Prior to that, it was the northern outpost of Cuban restaurant Cafe Con Leche.

Gotham Burger Co. is located just a few blocks north of Amsterdam Burger Company, another kosher burger spot that opened last fall.

Seems like this stretch of Amsterdam is booming for Upper West Siders with dietary restrictions.

H/t to MUW reader Iris.

Wrote last year that Americana Deli closed shop at 2657 Broadway (at 101st) after 20+ years in business.

Now MUW reader @JamieLee74 sends word (and the photo below) that the space is set to become an authorized Verizon retailer.

“Terrific news!” – Said nobody, ever.

Finally, women’s lingerie store Brief Encounters has closed at 239 Columbus (corner of 71st) after 18 years.

No word yet on what’s moving it, but that’s a prime Columbus Avenue corner spot.

Very belated thanks to MUW reader Eileen.

Here’s an interior photo of Gotham Burger Company taken during their soft open earlier this week (via FB), as well as the new Verizon signage at 2657 Broadway:
