Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Maxiga, Amour De Hair, Bluth Frozen Banana Stand

Monday, May 13th, 2013

Looks like gift/toy store Maxiga has closed — the windows are papered up and no one is answering their phone at their 2233 Broadway location (between 79th & 80th).

Maxiga opened on the Upper West Side back in September 2011 (this space used to house a Best Buy Mobile store).

Employees in neighboring businesses didn’t have any information and I suppose it’s possible they’re simply renovating, but I’d be surprised if they reopen.

A post on Maxiga’s Facebook page last month indicates they recently closed their UES location and were making a push into online sales.

If you were a fan of the store, you can still shop at Maxiga.com.

MUW reader Paul wrote in a while back to report that the newsstand/convenience store at 2346 Broadway (between 85th & 86th) had closed.

It now looks like hair salon Amour De Hair is getting ready to open at the space.

Amour De Hair previously had an UWS location at 428 Columbus (80th/81st) that closed back in 2011.

The mini-chain has three salons on the East Side.

In reopening news, @josephb76 reports the Lenny’s sandwich shop at at 302 Columbus (74th/75th) that closed last week due to a ceiling collapse managed to reopen the next day after crews works around the clock to repaid the damage.

Finally, if you missed the earlier post, the Bluth Frozen Banana Stand will be temporarily open at Columbus Circle from 1:00 – 7:00 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, 5/14).

There will be free frozen bananas as part of a promotion for the launch of season 4 of Arrested Development on Netflix later this month.
