UWS Openings, Closings, Reopenings & Relocations: Down & Quilt Shop, Birdbath Bakery, Pomodoro Rosso, Lululemon

Monday, May 21st, 2012

Some relocation and opening news that’s tied together:

Down & Quilt Shop (518 Columbus, at 85th) recently closed and has relocated one block west on Amsterdam.

Moving into the space is the uber-popular Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery, a “sister” bakery of Flatiron District fixture The City Bakery.

After 29 years on Columbus, Down & Quilt Shop is relocating to 527 Amsterdam, between 85th & 86th. This long-vacant space used to be home to Summa Gallery.

Nothing against the quilt shop, but the more exciting news is that Birdbath will be launching their first uptown location at the 518 Columbus space.

There are five other Birdbath locations downtown and all of them get rave reviews on Yelp (same goes for parent company The City Bakery).

From TheCityBakery.com:

Birdbath Neighborhood Green Bakery is the little sister of City Bakery, and one of the most eco-friendly food businesses on earth. Birdbath serves food that’s made from organic materials, is regionally grown, and seasonal. The bakeries are built from recycled, found, vintage, or sustainable materials. Birdbath is wind-powered, and all of the food is delivered from our main kitchen in bicycle-powered rickshaws. We also give discounts to any customer who arrives by bike, or even skateboard. Birdbath offers breakfast and lunch to go, with desserts and specialty drinks, seven days a week.

No word yet on when they’re opening, but my guess is they’ll be packed starting Day 1. (Thanks to MUW readers Julie, Sarah, Lisa, @JVDinNYC, and Kevin — that’s his photo).

Mentioned last week that Italian restaurant Pomodoro Rosso (229 Columbus, btw. 70/71) was closed by the health department. They are now open again.

Finally, posted back in February that Lululemon was opening a second UWS location at Broadway & 75th. The site has been dormant for a while, but MUW reader @vtweetme sent in a note earlier today indicating the store has finally put up the tell tale plywood with Lululemon branding.

Still no word on an opening date, but at least progress is being made. The space is comprised of two combined spots that use to house a Chase and a Clear Wireless store.
