Upper West Side Openings & Closings: The Sunburnt Calf, Burke & Wills, Manhattan Cricket Club

Meant to post this last month and it got completely lost in the shuffle.

Popular Australian gastropub The Sunburnt Calf has shuttered (226 W. 79th, between Amsterdam & Broadway).

If you were a fan of The Calf, this story has a silver lining: Two long-time employees are taking over the space and it will reopen with a similar Australian theme.

Zagat has the details on The Calf’s future:

Owner Heathe St. Clair is passing the keys to longtime employees Tim Harris and Matilda Boland, who will change the concept but still plan to look toward Australia for inspiration. The ground floor of the Upper West side venue will become Burke & Wills, an Australian bistro opening in July while the upstairs of that address will become the Manhattan Cricket Club, a speakeasy-style bar with cocktails by Greg Seider opening in September.

One of Sunburnt Calf’s most popular features was its all-you-can-drink brunch — no word yet if that will continue with the new owners.

The closing is a little surprising given that the restaurant had a solid 4-star rating from nearly 300 reviewers on Yelp.

The Sunburnt Calf opened on the UWS back in April of 2010.

H/t to MUW reader Lauren.

Short post tonight — back at it tomorrow.
