Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Treat House, Cardeology, Sol y Sombra, Aldo, Pinkberry

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

There’s some action brewing at the old Cardeology space at 452 Amsterdam (81st/82nd) — a new store called Treat House is gearing up to open.

It’s billed as “the first crisped rice treat emporium.”

Details beyond that are a bit thin at the moment, although I’m trading messages with their PR people and should have additional information as the opening nears.

For now, you can check out the “About Us” section on their website, which details how co-owners Chris and Jennifer Russell came up with the idea for the store after helping their kids make rice crispie treats for a charity bake sale.

Also of note:

Treats are always made with the customer’s health in mind. Unless specified otherwise, all treats are Kosher, gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free.  Marshmallows are made using raw cane sugar — never corn syrup. Breakfast bars contain brown rice, oats, flax, dried fruits, and seeds (some contain nuts.)

The opening is tentatively schedule for “early July,” although experience tells me these things always take longer than expected.

H/t to readers Lauren, Tamara, and Annie.

And speaking of Cardeology

I can’t recall when they closed at 452 Amsterdam, but MUW reader Ira reports that Cardeology recently reopened on Amsterdam a few blocks north — between 85th & 86th — in part of the space previously occupied by Uptown Birds.

Ira also reports that tapas restaurant Sol y Sombra is temporarily closed (462 Amsterdam, between 82nd/83rd).

I walked past the space yesterday (on my way to this) and the windows are all papered up.

Normally I’d assume this “temporary” closing is likely to be permanent, but I happened to pass by when the owner was out front and got a chance to speak to him briefly.

He assured me they are re-opening, but with a new chef and a few changes. They’re transitioning away from tapas to a “gastrobar” set up (see photo below, courtesy of Ira).

No word on how long they’ll be closed, but I would think they’d want to reopen as quickly as possible. For what it’s worth, the signage says “see you in a couple of days.”

The new Aldo store at 2321 Broadway (corner of 84th) is getting closer to opening — I walked by earlier and they were in the process of stocking inventory.

They’ve been shooting for a mid-May open and it looks like they’ll hit that target.

Finally, froyo fans will be happy to know that the Pinkberry slated for 414 Amsterdam (79th/80th) is also getting closer to opening.

As you can see below, the branded plywood is now up announcing a June opening.

UPDATE 6/20: Pinkberry is now open

They’re also hiring — you can e-mail manhattanjobs@pinkberry.com for more information.

Sol y Sombra was mediocre tapas at best IMHO compared to other tapas places in the city. I think it’s for the better that they change their vision for the restaurant.
