Upper West Side Openings & Closings: Yapple, Crumbs Bake Shop, Columbia Cottage, Dig Inn

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

Posted on Monday that Frozen Peaks had closed at Broadway & 95th.

Perhaps winter is a bad time to sell frozen yogurt, because Yapple (2056 Broadway, between 70th & 71st) has also recently shuttered.

Yapple had been open for just over a year, replacing Bacchus Wins in the fall of 2012.

At some point last year, Screme Gelato shuttered their storefront a block south on Broadway and began renting space inside the Yapple store. I hadn’t been in there since this summer, so I don’t know if that partnership was still intact — if so, this is actually a double closing of sorts. (I’m pretty sure Screme was still co-habitating, as there is signage in the window for those who keep kosher, which was related to Screme).

It will be interesting to see what moves in, as the store includes 25 feet of prime Broadway frontage.

According to Winick Realty, the broker marketing the space, it features 900 square feet on the ground floor and a 1,900 square foot basement, which sounds bigger than it felt.

In closing news, the Columbia Lion reports that the Crumbs Bake Shop at 2814 Broadway (between 108th & 109th) is apparently on the brink of shuttering.

The Lion dug up a Friedland Properties real estate listing for the space (asking rent is $30,000/month) and was told by a Friedland representative that “Crumbs will leave whenever we have another tenant.”

This particular Crumbs location had only been open since November 2011.

In other Columbia-area closing news, The Columbia Spectator notes that Chinese restaurant Columbia Cottage will close at the end of February, ending a 20+ year run at 1034 Amsterdam (corner of 111th).

Spec posted a letter sent to them from the restaurant’s management that you may be interested in a reading — here’s a portion of it:

We are sad that our landlord refused to renew our lease in good faith and instead he will put the space on the market for twice the amount of rent we are currently paying. Our last day open for serving lunch and dinner will be Wednesday February 20, 2014.

Also, a random note in that same Spec article that I found interesting: The Heights Bar & Grill and Samad’s Gourmet  (both temporarily closed due to Saturday’s massive fire at the neighboring Citibank) are owned by the same person — Feras Samad (which also explains the name of Samad’s Gourmet).

Finally, a quick follow-up on last night’s post about the new Dig Inn Seasonal Market slated to open at 2884 Broadway (between 111th & 112th):

I mentioned yesterday that the targeted opening date was unclear, but MUW reader Josh sent in the photo below (as well as the one used in last night’s post — thanks!) showing that they’re aiming to open sometime next month (the date was covered in yesterday’s photo).

I find these things usually take longer than expected — we’ll find out either way for sure sometime in the next six weeks.
