Upper West Side Openings & Reopenings: Gastronomie 491, Starbucks, Verizon Wireless, Unamed Children’s Clothing Concept, Abbey Pub, Hungarian Pastry Shop

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

I first mentioned Gastronomie 491 (491 Columbus, between 83rd & 84th) way back in September. At the time, word was they’d open “sometime in October.”

As with many openings in the neighborhood, things moved a little slower than originally planned. However, the wait is now over — the gourmet market and cafe is opening for business at 7:00 am tomorrow (Wednesday) morning.

I just got back from a preview event at the space and came away very impressed — I think Gastronomie 491 will be a hit with the neighborhood.

I’m still digesting the experience (both literally and figuratively) and will have a full write-up later this week. Until then, I’ll leave you with this blurb from their press materials:

Every product at Gastronomie 491 has been personally chosen by owner Nicole Ahronee, with a focus on artisanal products from small producers made with all-natural ingredients both locally and around the world. The market features a cafe, open kitchen with chef counter, prepared foods, artisanal cheeses, charcuterie and chocolates, baked goods, as well as gluten free items.

I should add that owner Nicole is an Upper West Sider. She lives two blocks from Gastronomie, so this is a truly local business.

As I type this, the Gastronomie 491 website is still only a place-holder of sorts — it should go live sometime between now and tomorrow.

The good folks at Winick Realty Group bring news of three new openings at Columbus Square:

An exciting, as-yet-unnamed children’s clothing concept leased approximately 7,000 square feet of ground floor space, in addition to an approximately 2,200-square-foot basement, at 808 Columbus Avenue.

“We are thrilled to once again introduce a retail concept to Manhattan at Columbus Square, an amazing development has brought new life to the Upper West Side through its singular vision and incomparable draw for the area’s residents and shoppers,” said Winick Realty Group LLC Associate Director Kelly Gedinsky, who exclusively represents the retail at Columbus Square with Executive Vice President Lori Shabtai.

Backed by a major athletic company, the store is set to be a game-changer for the area, offering a brand-new retail experience for families living in the complex, as well as students attending the Solomon Schechter School and the Mandell School on-site. Winick Realty Group LLC Senior Managing Director Zach Mishaan represented the retailer in this lease transaction and will continue to act as the company’s exclusive broker going forward.

At nearby 805 Columbus Avenue, Starbucks Coffee Company has leased 1,200 square feet on the corner of 100th Street, filling the last corner availability at the property, according to Gedinsky. Adjacent to the new Starbucks storefront, a 1,500-square-foot space was leased to Verizon Wireless. Jason Daniels and David Landes of Royal Properties represented Verizon in the transaction, while David Firestein of SCG Retail represented Starbucks.

No word yet on official opening dates for any of these three stores. Mentioned last week that the VZW store at 100 W. 96th Street recently closed. If you’re a true Verizon fanatic and were lamenting that you had nowhere in the neighborhood to go for your accessories, this opening should fill that void.

Finally, if you missed the post earlier today, The Abbey Pub and Hungarian Pastry Shop have reopened. They were both briefly shuttered by the Department of Health earlier this month.
