Grub Street must have had their spies on the Upper West Side working overtime this past weekend, because they had a trifecta of tips yesterday regarding neighborhood openings:
- Spring Street Natural, the “37-year-old Soho vegetarian-friendly restaurant,” is scheduled to open an Upper West Side outpost this fall at 474-476 Columbus (former Columbus Bakery spot) called “Spring Natural Kitchen.” Full-details from Grub Street here.
- Grub also reports that “Maria Loi, the self-proclaimed ‘Greek Martha Stewart,’ will be taking over the kitchen of Compass at 208 West 70th Street and changing the restaurant’s name to Loi.“ The new space is scheduled to open in September.
EaterNY placed a call to Compass yesterday to confirm the story and reports a curt response of “nothing’s been signed.” Eater also notes that Loi may “give Upper West Side neighbor and fellow Greek spot Kefi a run for its money.” (h/t to Lara!)
- Finally, Grub Street caught up with Chef Michael White (Ai Fiori, Osteria Morini, and Marea) over the weekend and he told them “I’ve looked at numerous spaces on the Upper West Side.” He added “There’s a pretty good bet I’ll be up there before the end of this year. Absolutely.”
Interesting quote from Chef White about the challenges of opening a restaurant on the UWS: “It’s hard to pay rent if you only have one turn. People have children and babysitter issues, or they take their children, and then they have to eat early and leave early — and you’re left with an empty restaurant. So it’s a challenge.”
