Is it us, or is the Upper West Side becoming a wildlife refuge?  Last month, we reported on the increasing abundance of rabid raccoons in Central Park.  Then came the coyote sighting in Central Park last week and the triple-coyote sighting at Columbia University over the weekend.  The gross rat problem in Verdi Square has been a front-and-center UWS story this week.  Now, check out this mandarin duck, spotted swimming with mallards in the freezing water outside a boat at the 79th Street Boat Basin.  The duck is virtually nonexistent in this area, living mostly in Japan and China, and is “undoubtedly” an escapee from a zoo or a duck-loving pet owner.  [Source: City Room]
