UPDATE 1/30/13: Alamo Drafthouse Signage Goes Up At Metro Theater

UPDATE 10/11: Liquor License Approved, But Opening Delayed Until 2014

Posted back in April that Alamo Drafthouse, a phenomenal chain of cinemas based in Austin, TX, was planning to open a five-screen theater in the long-vacant Metro Theater space at 2626 Broadway (between 99th & 100th).

There hasn’t been much action in the nearly six months since, but as you can see from the liquor license application notice above, the project is still moving forward.

I snapped this yesterday (during the 24th Annual Upper Broadway Harvest Festival) on the facing of The Metro, after noticing a similar sign across the street.

Normally I’d just include this in tonight’s “Openings/Closings,” but the initial post that Alamo Drafthouse was planning to open a New York City (and specifically Upper West Side) location was, at the time, the most “liked” post to ever appear on MyUpperWest.

That post has since been passed by this one from last week, but #2 out of 5,195 ain’t too shabby. There’s obviously a ton of interest in this opening.

I wrote a second post after the initial news broke going into a little more detail about what makes the Alamo Drafthouse chain so great. If you’re interested in learning more, definitely check that out.

The opening is ambiguously planned for “2013,” and a lot needs to happen before then.

But if you were concerned that a lack of progress at the site may have indicated a change in plans, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

I hope to have some additional information in the not-too-distant future.
