UWS Beauty Parlor Pays Up for Denying Entry to Elderly Customer

nettie-lobsenzThe New York Post reports that an elderly patron, now 101, is receiving a payout from an Upper West Side beauty salon after being denied entry because she was in a wheelchair.  Nettie Lobsenz, then 99, went to Mayra’s Beauty Salon (Amsterdam between 89th and 90th) in April 2008, accompanied by her daughter and in a wheelchair.  When she got to the door, a woman in the salon said that the boss “won’t let her in” due to “liability issues” since she “can’t walk.”  Even after Lobsenz went home and got a walker, the salon denied her entry.  Lobsenz and her daughter subsequently complained to the Human Rights Commission, who orchestrated a conciliation agreement between her and the salon owners in which the owners will pay Lobsenz $7,500.  The salon owners still deny any discrimination, however, and now have a sign posted that welcomes people with disabilities.
