UWS Evacuation Shelters Still Looking For Volunteers, Especially During Evening/Overnight Hours

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012

UPDATE 11:12 pm: Heard back from @persiandishnyc — I asked her if they needed more people tonight and this was her response:

“I don’t think so – they have a good turnout. But clothes & coats are welcomed, esp men’s.”

UPDATE 6:10 pm: Just got this tweet from MUW reader @persiandishnyc, who went over to 84th Street:

“Quiet now. Later is better. Planning to come back around 10.”

Posted last night about three evacuation shelters on the Upper West Side.

Just heard from MUW reader Erica that while they seem to have enough volunteers during the daytime, they’re looking for help during the evening and night shifts.

Here are the locations:

  • John Jay College (445 W. 59th, between Amsterdam & Columbus)
  • Louis D. Brandeis HS (145 W. 84th, between Amsterdam & Columbus)
  • IS 118 (154 W. 93rd, between Amsterdam & Columbus)

Erica specifically mentioned the 84th Street location as needing volunteers starting at 5:30 pm.

If you’re in the area and are looking to help, I suggest you stop by.

Anyone who has additional information, please feel free to let me know by e-mail at alerts [at] myupperwest.com or by tweet at @myupperwest. You can also post in the comments below.

UPDATE: Just saw this note on FB from MUW reader Aviva:

I’ve spent the last two days at IS 118. It does not need more volunteers during the day, but might need some over night. Around 90 people from the lower eat side moved in this afternoon, so it’s crowded and people are stressed. People with mental health expertise would probably be most appreciated.

I believe they also need help overnight with just admin type stuff, so don’t hesitate to stop by just because you’re not a mental health professional.
