Fire On West 72nd Requires 65+ Firemen To Control; 3 Sent To Hospital & Pizzeria Opening Likely Delayed

Posted back in June that Rigoletto Pizza would be moving from 208 Columbus (between 69th & 70th) — its home for 20 years — to a new location at 141 W. 72nd (between Amsterdam & Columbus).
They were supposed to open any day now, but a large fire broke out at the new space earlier today and it appears those plans are now on hold.
MUW readers Andrew, Tyler, and Gaby sent in this photo earlier today, noting Rigoletto had been slated to open “today or tomorrow.”
DNAinfo reports the fire started on the building’s second floor and required more than 65 firefighters to get it under control.
Three firemen were taken to the hospital and listed in stable condition, but it appears as though no one was seriously hurt.
No word on what may have started the blaze, but I have to imagine this is going to push back Rigoletto’s opening (which seems like a secondary concern at the moment).
The ground-floor space at 141 W. 72nd had been vacant since the previous tenant, Red Velvet Bakery, closed in March.
