UWS Openings: Cardinal Camera, Cocina Economica, Halloween Costume Pop-Up, Party City

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012

Posted last month that the Ritz Camera at 2409 Broadway (near 88th) was closing as part of a broader bankruptcy by Ritz Camera & Image LLC.

As I mentioned in that post, the closing marked the end of a stretch of 60+ years where a camera store of some sort was located at Broadway & 88th.

It now appears as though that streak will continue, as a Pennsylvania-based camera store chain has stepped in to take-over numerous Ritz locations, including the UWS branch.

Cardinal Camera is a family-owned chain of stores that got its start back in 1937.

My understanding is that they bought out the leases and equipment of at least eight Ritz locations, doubling their store count to 16 (possibly more — the exact details of Cardinal’s expansion aren’t 100% clear).

If you were a customer at Ritz, the new Cardinal Camera store should be able to step in and take over — you can find a full list of there services here.

Elsewhere…

Posted a few weeks ago that popular UWS restaurant Recipe was closing and will be reborn as a home-style Mexican establishment called Cocina Economica (same owners as Recipe).

Just as a quick update — a message on the restaurant’s voicemail indicates Cocina Economica should be open by “mid-October.”

If you’re looking to do some Halloween costume shopping, another seasonal pop-up shop has opened in the neighborhood — it’s located in the Apthorp on W. 79th, between Broadway & West End.

This space joins the two Halloween City pop-ups mentioned last month: Broadway & 80th (former Syms space) and Amsterdam & 70th (former TD Amertrade space).

Finally… going way back to May 2011… Posted back then that Party City was planning to open a 13,000 square foot store at 670 Columbus (between 92nd & 93rd).

It’s taken almost 17 months, but it looks like construction has begun. MUW reader Andrea sent in some details:

They only last week put up scaffolding and wood planks to enclose the area ahead of beginning the excavation. The man I met, Charlie, seems to be in charge/heads up Arsenal (the construction company). He said he is supposed to be done by June 2013 and to expect a lot of large construction equipment in the area soon.

So if you live in the area and are wondering what all the fuss is for, there you go.
