UWS Openings & Closings: Mystery Space Adjacent To 7-Eleven, Details Designer Shoe Outlet, iCrave FroYo, Rumored Pharmacy

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2012

Previously posted in June & in September about the 7-Eleven slated for the former Gourmet Garage space at 2567 Broadway (between 96th & 97th).

When Gourmet Garage closed last December, the early rumor was that the space would be subdivided into two units.

It looks like that’s the case, with 7-Eleven only taking the northern half — the photo above shows a wall going up inside the space.

No word yet on what the other half will be, so if anyone wants to chat up one of the construction guys and report back, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks to MUW readers Jim and Ann for the tip (that’s Jim’s photo).

Moving a couple of blocks north…

Ann also sent in another photo (below) of the new Details Designer Shoe Outlet mentioned last night (Broadway, between 98th & 99th). She reports that it “looks on the verge of opening.”

No additional details at the moment, but I can tell you what brands are listed on their window: Tory Burch, Steve Madden, Dolce Vita, Boutique 9, Guess, Frye, Coach, Michael Kors, Via Spiga, Cole Hann, Enzo Angiolini, Sam Edelman, Calvin Klein, and Vince.

UDATE: MUW reader Cloggie posted in the comments section that she saw customers in the store on Sunday.

Moving a couple blocks south…

Posted back in June that a new froyo places called iCrave was planning to open at 2541 Broadway (at 95th).

MUW reader Yael reports the store recently opened, officially flooding that stretch of Broadway with multiple frozen treat options.

In addition to iCrave, there’s a Lite Choice across the street, a Tasti D-Lite half a block away, and a 16 Handles three blocks north.

iCrave’s website is still a work in progress, but I can tell you it’s a self-serve type spot. According to a photo of their awning in the June post, they feature 21 flavors and 40 toppings; they also serve smoothies.

There’s an iCrave in Brooklyn that garners an average of 3 1/2 stars on Yelp (19 reviews as of today).

Elsewhere…

Posted last year that Rodos Interiors & Custom Cabinetry had relocated from 215 W. 79th (btw. Broadway & Amsterdam) to Brooklyn.

There’s been construction going on there for a while now and a worker told me it’s going to be “a pharmacy.”

UPDATE 1/28/13: 79th Street Pharmacy Opens

UPDATE 2/13/13: A letter from the owners of 79th Street Pharmacy

The space is on the small side, so I would think it’s going to be an independent shop (assuming the pharmacy rumor is correct).

Seems like a curious choice as independent pharmacies seem to be a dying breed (UWS Goodrich Pharmacy closed back in June after 40 years), although the independent Apthorp Pharmacy is nearby at 78th & Broadway. There’s also a large Duane Reade at Amsterdam & 79th.

Finally, a reminder that it’s Day 2 of the MTA’s FASTRACK maintenance work on the A/C (and E) subway lines. There are station closures and service changes from 10:00 pm – 5:00 am every day until Friday morning.

The shoe outlet is already open. I walked past it on Sunday and there were customers buying shoes.

Great update, thanks! Do we really need another 7-11? Another yogurt shop?! Come on, landlords! Do the community a favor and open something unique!

its interesting because the same store, varizioni, is also on 103 and broadway. i was shocked to see another store opening so close.

I also thought it was odd.

A few readers pointed out that this is not the first time that Variazioni has opened stores near each. They apparently used to have two stores a few blocks apart in the 80s and there are currently stores near each other on 72nd & 68th.

I have no idea the reason behind it, but this seems to be a concerted effort on their part.

Belated thanks for this — just updated the post.
