UWS Openings & Closings: 7-Eleven, The Neighborhood, Magpie

Monday, June 25th, 2012

It’s been just about six months since the Gourmet Garage at 2567 Broadway (between 96th & 97th) closed.

Now it looks like something less “gourmet” and more “garage” is moving into the space — 7-Eleven will be opening their third UWS location there.

Work permits at the site indicate it’s the future home to the purveyor of Slurpees (h/t to MUW reader Ann).

It’s unclear if 7-Eleven is taking over the entire space or just a portion of it. A Gourmet Garage rep had e-mailed back in December to say the landlord was subdividing the space among multiple tenants. No word at the moment if that’s still the case or if circumstances have changed.

When it opens, this newest “Sevies” will join other UWS locations at 676 Amsterdam (at 93rd), and the more recently opened one at 600 Columbus (at 89th).

A recent press release indicates the chain plans to “double its 20-store presence in Manhattan in the next year and grow to about 135 units by 2017,” so don’t be surprised to see a few more pop-up elsewhere in the neighborhood.

Elsewhere…

In closing news, it appears as though The Neighborhood (936 Amsterdam) has shuttered. MUW reader Matt sent in the following note:

We live very close to The Neighborhood at 106th & Amsterdam, and they seem to have closed for good.  At first they had a sign saying they would be closed a few days a week and now we haven’t seen them open in a long while.

It was a nice place but they never seemed to really get their footing.

I bought a Living Social deal from The Neighborhood back in February — I suppose I need to look into getting a refund now…

UPDATE 4/8/13: Jazz-themed restaurant The Ellington has opened at 936 Amsterdam

If you missed the post this morning, MTA FASTRACK maintenance is back this week. This time it’s affecting overnight service (10 pm – 5 am) on the 1/2/3 subway lines — click here for details.

Finally, posted earlier this month that an ambiguous retail store named Magpie is opening in the former Roam boutique space (488 Amsterdam, between 83rd & 84th).

I e-mailed them for more information but haven’t heard back. In the meantime, original tipster Christina sent in the updated photo below — they recently put their awning up.

Gourmet Garage is more beneficial to the neighborhood than a 7-Eleven. People live here not to frequent big name chains.

    Go to heaven, 7-Eleven
