UWS Closings: Good Enough To Eat, The Cottage, Hudson Beach Cafe

UPDATE 7/19: Reports Of Good Enough To Eat’s Demise Are Greatly Exaggerated
UPDATE: 5/14/13: UWS Fixture Good Enough To Eat Finds New Home In The Neighborhood
Posted back in December that neighborhood fixture Good Enough To Eat (483 Amsterdam, btw. 83/84) was locked in a dispute with its landlord and might need to move.
Now it looks like that’s definitely the case, as the restaurant has lost its lease.
Good Enough To Eat has been on the Upper West Side for 31 years, and at its current location for the past 23.
Owner Carrie Levin would like to stay in the neighborhood, but has also been looking at locations in Harlem, Queens, and Brooklyn if she can’t find space on the Upper West Side. I also found this note interesting:
[Levin] and her husband recently purchased a farm in Morris, Connecticut, investing their life’s saving to produce local produce for the restaurant. The farm’s produce has already made its way onto the menu, with garlic scapes being added to the restaurant’s mashed potatoes and local blackberries have made their way into the blackberry vinagrette.
With brunch lines out the door, Good Enough To Eat is sure to be missed by many. Check out the post from December if you want some additional history on the restaurant.
Elsewhere…
Speaking of neighborhood stalwarts, Chinese restaurant The Cottage (360 Amsterdam, at 77th) closed over the weekend. Whether it’s temporary or permanent remains to be seen.
MUW readers David and Jason report a “Closed for repairs” sign recently went up.
My first thought was that this was a DOH closing, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. I walked by earlier today and their “A” rating is still posted, with no DOH signage. The shades were drawn and it was hard to see inside, but it didn’t seem as though any work was being done.
This may indeed be temporary, but my experience is that these “Closed for repairs” signs are often a precursor to places going out of business. If that’s the case, I know at least two Upper West Siders who will be disappointed.
From David (who lives across the street):
In years I’ve never known it to close… They’re a weekly staple for me! And many others!
And from Jason:
I really hope that it’s not closing for good, I’ve been eating there since I moved here 17 years ago and it was fantastic food and run by the same family all these years.
In closing news that IS related to the health department, Hudson Beach Cafe was shuttered by DOH on Friday. They appear to be open again as of today (h/t @chantalmclaugh)
