UWS Openings & Closings: Flywheel, Hummus Place, The Purple Fig, Cold Stone Creamery/Tim Hortons

Looks like spinning studio Flywheel is trading up to a larger space in the neighborhood.
They currently operate out of studio inside JCC In Manhattan (334 Amsterdam, at 76th), but will be moving to a space inside Kidville (466 Columbus, between 82nd& 83rd) this fall.
Crain’s has the details, but you need to be a paying subscriber to see them.
I’ll respect their paywall and not share too much (actually, there aren’t that many details anyway), but I’ll note that the new space is reported to be roughly 3,500 square feet, which is “more than twice as large” as their current space in the JCC.
They’re looking to open in the new space some time in October.
One of Flywheel’s biggest competitors, SoulCycle, did their own Upper West Side relocation shuffle last year — they moved from West 72nd to a much larger and newer space at West 77th & Amsterdam (almost exactly a year ago today).
Perhaps being a block away from each other was too close for comfort…
Thanks to MUW reader Lauren S. for the tip.
In closing news…
MUW reader Jasyon reports the Hummus Place at 2608 Broadway (btw. 98th & 99th) is closing on October 1st.
He had brunch there the other day and “noticed many items crossed out on the menu.” After inquiring with a waitress, he was told of the closing. In her words, it’s due to the “bad area.”
I asked him if he could clarify what she may have meant by that, and this is what he wrote back:
She said “bad area” because theres a building next door with “crazy people” in it — i think there is housing next door for high functioning developmentally disabled adults, ive passed by them – never thought of them to be dangerous – but my friends and i chuckled when she called it a “bad area” because of that.
Hard to imagine that’s the actual reason, but you never know. In any case, I believe Hummus Place’s other UWS location (305 Amsterdam, btw. 74th/75th) is unaffected by this.
Posted last night about The Purple Fig likely being closed for good, but MUW reader Steve reported an odd twist in the story today.
Steve received an e-mail from Groupon listing an active deal for Purple Fig.
Despite the existence of that link, if you go to Groupon.com and look at their NYC deals for today, Purple Fig’s offer doesn’t seem to be listed.
I’m not sure if the deal was listed by accident or if perhaps Purple Fig still has some life left in it, but the restaurant’s telephone is still disconnected and they haven’t responded to an e-mail I sent them yesterday.
If they were still open, you’d figure they would want to get back to me and set the record straight.
I still think they’re likely finished, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Finally, if you missed the post this morning, the Cold Stone Creamery/Tim Hortons combo at 162 W. 72nd (btw. Amsterdam & Columbus) was recently closed by the health department. After being shuttered last Friday, they reopened for business earlier today.
