UWS Openings & Closings: The Purple Fig, Verizon Wireless (In Former H & H Bagels Space)
It’s day three of “The Purple Fig Death Watch.”
Posted on Monday that the restaurant had not reopened from their “summer vacation” as planned and that their telephone was disconnected.
Then yesterday, despite all indications that the restaurant had ceased operating, a deal was listed for them on Groupon.
Today, that deal seems to be Groupon’s featured NYC offering and the restaurant’s phone has been reactivated… although no one is picking up.
Hard to tell what’s going on here. I called three times today and rather than get an automated response that the phone was disconnected, it just rang, and rang, and rang — no voicemail or answering machine (and no human).
The restaurant also appears to be active on OpenTable again. For the past few weeks they had been listed as being offline.
I didn’t have time to walk over there today, so with them not picking up their phone I can’t say for sure whether or not they’re open.
I’m still waiting for a response to an e-mail I sent them earlier in the week.

A lot of people have been asking me about what’s moving into the old H & H Bagels space at Broadway & 80th, as construction at the site is steadily progressing.
I posted about it back in February and April, but I sometimes forget that other than my sister, most people don’t read every post and not everyone reading today was reading back then.
In any event, the space is slated to become a Verizon Wireless store.
Feel free to throw-up in your mouth just a little.
I haven’t been able to confirm an opening date, but when that day comes, the Verizon Wireless store currently located just north at 2268 Broadway (between 81st & 82nd) will close.
