UWS Openings & Closings: Card-o-Mat, On The Ave Hotel, NYLO Hotel, Cafe Tallulah, Mystery Restaurant…
UPDATE 1/30: Card-o-Mat officially closed
Looks like Card-o-Mat (2884 Broadway, between 112th & 113th), a boutique card and gift shop, is closing after 20 years on the Upper West Side.
“Store Closing” and “Everything Must Go!” signage appeared over the weekend.
Card-o-Mat opened for business in 1993 — from the store’s website:
After having owned and operated a chain of six Hallmark stores in New Jersey, Rosalie and her late husband Ken opened a smaller shop, Card-o-Mat, in 1993. With their vast industry knowledge, highly developed sense of style, and awareness of customer taste, the Columbia University location was soon bursting at the seams. The store was doubled in size in a year and continues to showcase a unique blend of product.
The store has a mostly-positive 3 1/2 star rating on Yelp.
No word yet on why the store is closing, although I suspect it’s either a rent issue, retirement by the owner, or simply a result of a downturn in the industry.
I suspect e-mail, e-cards, text messaging, social media, and personalized photo cards from various websites have had a significant detrimental effect on the sales of traditional paper cards.
The store will remain open until they sell out their current inventory (which is now discounted).
Thanks to MUW reader @mariaramirezNY for the tip & photo.
DNAinfo recently reported (during my quasi-holiday break) that boutique UWS hotel On The Ave (2178 Broadway, at 77th) will be replaced by a new hotel from Texas-based NYLO — the chain’s first in New York City.
The new property will offer “a contemporary take on the era of the Roaring 20s, Prohibition, Jazz and Bohemian lifestyle.”
Of more interest to Upper West Siders is that the property will be adding a third “destination restaurant” to join the Serafina and Geisha Table that opened in the hotel’s ground floor space last February.
The new NYLO hotel is slated to open in Q3 2013, although there are no specifics available about the new restaurant opening. On The Ave, Serafina, and Geisha Table will all remain open during renovations to the hotel.
If you missed the post this morning, reservations for 2013 Winter Restaurant Week are now open — more than two dozen UWS restaurants are participating, plus hundreds more throughout NYC.
Winter Restaurant Week runs from 1/14 to 2/8.
Grub Street posted copies of the restaurant’s dinner and cocktail menus earlier today. (h/t to MUW reader @jerg5)
They did not include the full drink menu, so I’m also posting a photo I snapped of the menu on Saturday night (includes wines by the glass and beer):
