UWS Openings & Closings: Cocina Economica, 7-Eleven, Ollie’s Noodle Shop, Big Nick’s Burger Joint

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Posted last month that Cocina Economica Mexico (452 Amsterdam, between 81st & 82nd) had finally opened up in the former Recipe space (same owners — they also own neighboring Land Thai).

They recently posted their menu online and DNAinfo had a brief write-up on the restaurant earlier this week, including a slew of photos.

You can read the DNA article here.

The restaurant’s pricing seems reasonable, with everything on the menu $15 or less. From DNA:

Whereas Recipe was “a little more high end,” [co-owner David Bank] said, the new restaurant should be more budget-friendly. “I want customers to come in every day.”

The restaurant’s website is still a work in progress, but here’s the menu:

For the time being, Cocina Economica is only open for dinner. The plan is to begin lunch service during the first week in February, and brunch may follow sometime after that.

Recipe was a popular spot (as is Land Thai), so the expectations for this new restaurant are high.

I’m hoping to check it out myself sometime in the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, in “Nobody-seems-happy-about-it-yet-they-still-have-plenty-of-customers” news…

Wrote in December that the 7-Eleven taking over half of the former Gourmet Garage space at 2567 Broadway (between 96th & 97th) was getting close to opening.

Yesterday, MUW readers ‏@ashirak, @eitanmk, and @cloggiegirl reported that last Friday appears to have been its first day of business.

Still no word on what’s taking over the other half of the space.

This latest Sevies will be the third on the Upper West Side, joining others at 676 Amsterdam (at 93rd), and the more recently opened one at 600 Columbus (at 89th).

Don’t be surprised to see a couple more pop up in the neighborhood — as I wrote back in June, the chain plans to have 135 Manhattan locations by 2017. That’s up from about 20 in mid-2012.

As mentioned earlier today, Ollie’s Noodle Shop (1991 Broadway, between 67th &68th) is closed indefinitely due to a fire this morning. The neighboring Apple Store was temporarily closed for a few hours but reopened around 2:00 pm.

Finally, if you missed the post this morning…

The big closing-related news today is the credible rumor that Big Nick’s may be getting ready to shutter after 50+ years on the Upper West Side.
