Looks like there’s some pre-opening action at the former Roam Boutique space at 488 Amsterdam (between 83rd & 84th).

Roam closed earlier this year after seven years in the neighborhood.

MUW reader Christine sent in the photo above and this note:

Some activity at the former Roam store that closed a few months back. Looks like retail based on the shelves that were up, but I’m not sure. The paper covering the windows said “Magpie” along with someone’s name – I presume for deliveries. Not a lot of info, but…

Some Googling turned up the following Facebook page, created just last week.

Looks like it is indeed a retail space, called Magpie (which is also a type of bird), but that’s where the information stops. I’ve sent a message to them looking for more details — hopefully I’ll have more to report next week.

Elsewhere…

Posted last month that Strawberry clothing boutique is closing (2689 Broadway, between 102nd & 103rd). They’re having a liquidation sale that I believe is still going on (at least 20% – 70% off).

When they finally do shutter, the Duane Reade next door (2681 Broadway) will be taking over the space.

MUW reader Ann reports a cashier at DR told her it’s expanding and becoming one of the Duane Reades that sells “sandwiches and expensive stuff” (I believe that quote is directly from the cashier, although I doubt that’s what DR calls it in their press materials…)

Speaking of liquidation sales, the liquidation sale discounts at the UWS Betsey Johnson store are now up to 40% – 60% off (248 Columbus, between 71st & 72nd). A rep there told me earlier today the sale should continue for “at least another three weeks.”

A quick update on the new Chase that’s under construction next to the Reebok Club — a construction worker told me it should be open in “four to six weeks.” These opening dates are almost always a moving target, so take that with a grain of salt. In the interim, I’m sure you’ll have no problem finding another Chase somewhere nearby.

Finally, if you missed it earlier today, the early word on recently opened Piccolo Cafe is very positive (313 Amsterdam, between 74th & 75th).
