Posted earlier this month that the McDonald’s at 2049 Broadway (at 71st) was closed for renovations.
Good news if you were craving Chicken McNuggets for Thanksgiving — they reopened this morning.
Thanks to MUW reader Kevin for the photo of the new exterior. For comparison, you can check out Kevin’s shot of the old exterior at the bottom of the post.
I don’t know exactly what changes were made, but I walked past the space during construction and the interior was pretty much completely gutted.
Business Insider had an article last year about renovations taking place at McDonald’s around the country. I’m not sure how much of this applies to the 71st Street location, but FYI:
The interior redesign will get rid of classic bright reds and yellows and feature a more muted, relaxing scheme. The lighting will be more contemporary, instead of fluorescent, and the seating, more comfortable. Also, the dining area will be divided into separate rooms to accommodate needs. Some dining rooms will even have flat screen TVs.
The article implies the image transformation is supposed to encourage people to spend more time at McD’s, sort of like Starbucks.
I guess time will tell.
In closing (and possible relocating/expanding) news, @keithmarder sent in the following information:
A neighbor just told me Soutine Bakery is closing after Thanksgiving. The Muffins Cafe (aka The Muffin Shop) purchased their lease.
The two spaces are NOT connected — you actually have to cross W. 70th to get from one to another.
If the news is accurate, it’s unclear if Muffins Cafe will be moving, or will expand and use both spaces.
Here’s what the exterior of McDonald’s looked like before it was renovated — definitely more muted:
