UWS Openings, Closings & Quashed Speculation

Looks like the Upper West Side is getting an IT’SUGAR.

MUW readers Gaby, Andrew, and Tyler snapped this photo on Broadway, between 61st & 62nd. I believe this is the space that housed the Uniqlo pop-up show last summer.

It’s probably a sign that I continue to grow older and cooler as each day passes, but IT’SUGAR appears to be a national company and I’ve never heard of them. Their website’s “About” page describes them as “one of the largest and fastest growing specialty candy and gift retailers in the world.”

Their Twitter profile says their stores are “trendy sweets emporiums, offering the ultimate sugar rush.”

Frankly, their website is sort of all over the place… it also includes this bit of information (kINd oF wRitTen lIkE tHiS):

IT’SUGAR: A movement dedicated to the single-minded pursuit of everything frivolous, overindulgent & delightfully naughty.

Our mission is to disrupt the white noise of daily life with a bunch of stuff that serves no purpose whatsoever other than to elicit laughter, happiness and childlike euphoria.

Rules are made to be broken, rewritten, then broken again.

We take great pleasure in great pleasure.

So, there’s that…

If anyone knows what the hell that means, please drop me a line. Until then, I’m assuming this place sells “candy and stuff.”

This will be IT’SUGAR’s third Manhattan location — they’re planning to open in August.

Elsewhere…

In closing news, Pet Stop (564 Columbus, between 87th & 88th) recently shuttered (h/t to MUW reader Beth).

In last night’s “Openings/Closings” post I speculated that Rigoletto’s relocation from 208 Columbus to 141 W. 72nd might open the way for neighbor Magnolia Bakery (200 Columbus) to expand.

Apologies if I got any Magnolia devotees excited by that thought, but it appears that’s not on the agenda.

I stopped by Rigoletto earlier today and a woman behind the counter told me that restaurant’s owner is keeping the lease and plans to open another business there, although she couldn’t provide any specifics.

It seems a bit odd that they would move a seemingly successful business after 20 years and open a new one there, rather than just open the new one at 141 W. 72nd, but that’s for them to decide.

Finally, if you missed the post earlier today, UWS restaurant Cafe Ronda was closed by the Health Department on Monday — they reopened today.

Here are some pics from IT’Sugar’s website:
