UWS Openings, Relocations & Speculation: Rigoletto Pizza, Magnolia Bakery, One Cup Two Cupcakes, Museum Of Food & Drink

Tuesday, June 12th, 2012

After 20 years at 208 Columbus (between 69th & 70th), UWS pizza fixture Rigoletto is relocating elsewhere in the neighborhood.

They’re moving nearby, into the former Red Velvet Bakery space at 141 W. 72nd, between Amsterdam & Columbus.

It’s probably nothing, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t note that 208 Columbus is located adjacent to the UWS Magnolia Bakery… and both spaces are part of the same building… which means the same landlord… which means it probably wouldn’t be too difficult for Magnolia to knock down a wall and expand if they wanted to…

That’s purely speculation on my part, but don’t be shocked if it happens.

UPDATE 6/13: Speculation quashed

As for Rigoletto… I’ve tried them a couple of times based on strong recommendations and was not impressed. They’re clearly doing something right to be in business for 20 years, and most of their Yelp reviews are pretty solid, but I still prefer both Freddie & Pepper’s and T & R.

Thanks to MUW readers Kevin (for the photo) and @fifthand56th (for the initial tip).

MUW reader Lisa sent in word a few days ago that a new bakery called One Cup Two Cupcakes recently opened at 953 Columbus (between 106th & 107th). Per Lisa:

I walked by this morning and noticed this new place, called One Cup Two Cupcakes, between 107th and 108th. Their website explains that the name refers to the baker Jessica Echevarria’s dependence on coffee: one cup – two cupcakes.

Anyway the wares looked delectable. It’s a corner shop where another bakery closed not long ago as I recall…

I believe the previous bakery Lisa is referring to is Pan & Plus French Bakery

In addition to cupcakes, it looks like O.C.T.C features pies and specialty cakes, as well as doing custom orders. It appears to be a full-service bakery and not just another cupcake store.

Also, if you have dietary restrictions, their website says “gluten-free products available upon request.”

Finally, if you missed the post earlier today, there’s a new “Museum Of Food & Drink” in the works (with edible exhibits) and they’re targeting the Upper West Side as a possible location.
