UWS Oscar Events

Friday, March 5th, 2010

oscar-red-carpetThe 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be held this Sunday, but just because you aren’t enjoying the festivities at the Kodak Theatre in LA doesn’t mean you are stuck watching the Oscars in your onesie on the sofa… the Upper West Side has some cool Oscar-related events this weekend to celebrate critically acclaimed films.  First, the Film Society of Lincoln Center is putting on “And The Winner Is… NY!”  This three-day film festival includes 10 Academy favorites set and shot in Empire City.  Enjoy films like West Side Story, Dog Day Afternoon, The Godfather, Annie Hall, and Raging Bull to “decide for yourself if being able to turn right on red really is the sole cultural advantage of Tinseltown.”  Another pre-Oscars event takes place on the second floor of The Shops at Columbus Circle (Time Warner Center).  Stop by to walk among a display of Oscars in various stages of completion along with (for the first time ever) the actual Oscar statuette to be presented to the Best Actress winner this year.  As a special treat, visitors will also have the opportunity to hold an actual Oscar statuette and have their picture taken for free, courtesy of Kodak.

Looking for an Academy Award-night event?  The biggest one on the UWS is “Oscar Night and the City,” NYC’s official Oscar Night America celebration, in which you can enjoy a fancy reception at Alice Tully Hall with industry insiders before a live viewing of the Academy Awards.  While the tickets are pricey at $150 and $225, proceeds go towards the cultural foundation of NYC & Company.  If you are seeking an Oscar night that remains a little more low-key, head to the new Sunburnt Calf (79th and Broadway) for a live viewing party.  “Get glam and clink glasses” at cozy and casual bar/restaurant, an off-shoot of the East Village’s Sunburnt Cow.
