UWS Photo Of The Day: Old School Checker Cab on West 87th

MUW reader @5borocoffee sent in this photo a little earlier today.
Parked on W. 87th, between Columbus & Central Park West, a placard in the rear window indicates this old school Checker cab is part of FilmCars’ fleet.
I don’t know of any filming locations in the neighborhood today, although FilmCars also rents their vehicles out for weddings and other special occasions.
NYT’s CityRoom blog had a nice write-up on the history of Checker cabs a couple of years back. The last one rolled off the production line more than 30 years ago, in the summer of 1982.
I remember occasionally riding in Checker cabs while visiting my grandmother on the UWS back in the 80′s and early ’90s — they were MUCH cooler than the generic Chevy Caprices that dominated NYC taxi fleets at the time.
Nice little blast from the past.
