UWS Openings and Closings

Restaurants are sprouting up on the Upper West Side, with several having just opened or getting ready to open, Eater reports (from their source, Eating in Translation). We mentioned in September that a new restaurant was going in the space that previously housed AIX/Bloomingdale Road (Broadway at 88th), and (aged.), the Forest Hills steakhouse, has opened (or is close to opening) its first Manhattan location in the space. Also spotted is Rita’s Italian Ice, a franchise with 550 locations outside of NYC, which is opening a location at Broadway and 93rd in addition to locations in Murray Hill and the Upper East Side. Up the street is a new Maoz Vegetarian, opening in the Empanada Joe’s location on Broadway between 110th and 111th. Finally, a couple more soon-to-be-open restaurants were reported in the 90′s and 100′s, including a second location of Noche Mexicana (Amsterdam at 102nd), creatively called Noche Mexicana II, and a Jamaican/Southern style restaurant called Jams. Looks like Upper West Siders will get more choices soon when it comes to eating out.
In less positive news, a My Upper West tipster reports that Urban Cottage, the stationary and gift store on 94th and Broadway, is closing its doors today. They are clearing out everything in the store (from inventory to fixtures) with a going-out-of-business sale. Fingers crossed for a good store to open in the soon-to-be-empty space.
